Recently a person whom I much admire told me that everything a trader needed for a good backtesting platform was the sum of the resources of Python and R.
They really go well together and can produce amazing results. I downloaded both of them and some books and started a mentoring process with a friend that works in I.T.
I hope I can learn them without much problem, and I do understand that learning a programming language (in this case, two) requires constant effort, time and commitment.
But, the results seem to overcome the learning curve. So, here we go!

I'm a trader, 35 years old, and I've been changing approach to the markets, from a mostly qualitative approach to a quantitative way of thinking. For inspiration and guidance, I rely on the work of Victor Niederhoffer and other market veterans such as Larry Williams.
I'm very grateful for their generosity of sharing their work and their time with me.
I have a beloved wife and a wonderful boy.
Could spend (and I freqüently do) hours and hours studying the markets or playing chess with friends.
What else? Keep coming visit me and I believe you'll find out.
Regards,
Newton Paulo Linchen.

Sounds interesting. I have read that Python is recommended as a best first language to learn. I’ve also read that R is a good platform for statistical backtesting. It’s to a degree, a free version of Matlab.

I would like to learn R so that I could backtest pairs, but I’m not sure I have the time and patience to put into a new language.
Good luck with your learning, and let us know how it goes.

Hello, Steve,
I’m not a pairs trader, so I intend to use these languages to enhance my research on market interrelations.
We are on the same page. I have commenced learning R just last week. Best of luck to you.
Newton, this is a big step. I wish you the best of luck. Learning programming from scratch (I don’t remember you having any previous programming experience) is quite a task.
However, the benefits are amazing, so it is an effort that will certainly pay off.
